A total of 40 rice demo fields  in Kalabo district have all dried up due to drought in not only the District but the entire Western province.

Acting Kalabo District Agricultural Coordinator John Kapela has confirmed the development in an interview  adding that the demo fields were meant to introduce new rice farming technologies under the Agricultural Productivity Program for Southern Africa (APPSA) have all dried up.

Mr. Kapela however says  a final assessment would soon be undertaken in order to ascertain the actual number of affected farmers.

He further said that All the rice demos based in four agricultural camps namely Luanginga, Namatindi, Buleya and Ng’uma have recorded 100 percent crop failure.

According to statistics from the Meteorological department which indicate that Kalabo district received a cumulative total of 482.1 millimeters of rainfall during the 2018-2019 rainy season.
