The Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ has suspended with immediate effect all campaign activities by the ruling PF and the opposition UPND in Lusaka, Mpulungu, Namwala and Nakonde districts, due to the escalation of political violence in the said areas.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano says the suspension will be reviewed in 14 days and he advised all media houses in the said districts not cover any political activity for the two political parties.
And Mr. Nshindano said the Commission has suspended all Road Shows for all political parties, including independent candidates, across the country, due to the violation of electoral code of conduct and disregard of the Covid-19 guidelines.
Speaking at a Press Briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Nshindano said the commission is dismayed that roadshows are also instigating violence and instilling fear in the public and that the commission will work with relevant institutions to enforce the suspensions.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nshindano said going forward, only three key members of any given political party will be allowed to conduct the door to door campaigns as opposed to a large group.
He also said the Public Announcement Systems should not be in a convoy as only one vehicle will be allowed.
