Government has seized 74 heads of cattle, which were allegedly being smuggled from Namwala district, Southern Province, to Lusaka via Itezhi Tezhi.
The 74 heads of cattle were in a truck belonging to Zambeef, before they were intercepted at Baanga Pontoon, which is normally used to across the Kafue River between Itezhi tezhi and Namwala district.
Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Permanent Secretary David Shamulenge said in that the interception followed suspicions and a tip off that the truck was from Namwala district, in an area believed to be heavily infested with the Foot and Mouth Disease.
Dr Shamulenge said if his Ministry is to lift the ban, there is need for concerted efforts from traditional leaders, security agencies, District Commissioners, as well as the local community.
He directed that all Provincial Livestock and Fisheries Officers should put people at all entry points, because his ministry has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) directing all animals to be counterchecked at all entry points.
