Young African Leaders Initiative YALI has maintained that Republican President Edgar Lungu is eligible to stand for the 2021 general elections because he did not serve a full term in the period 2015 to 2016.

YALI President Andrew Ntewewe notes that, as ruled by the Constitutional Court, a full term of Presidential Office entails that an office bearer stayed in office for more than three years.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Ntewewe said as far as the law is concerned, President Lungu has only served one term hence making him eligible to contest the 2021 general elections.

Mr. Ntewewe has further called on Zambians to respect the institutions of government such as the constitutional court.

But Lawyer John Sangwa earlier argued that President Edgar Lungu is not eligible to stand in 2021 because he has already been elected twice to the office of President as the law stipulates.

I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
