TIMES AND SEASONS

TIMES AND SEASONS

times and seasonsThe night was cold and quiet. It was that kind of chilly breeze which almost made any adult wish for the shortest route to the bathroom! Why did the cold have to be compounded with the ceaseless pressure to go to what the ancients called the ‘water closet’? Nancy’s thoughts drifted from the cold to the possible reasons why it was thus named. It was then that a pitiful whining cut through the night, rudely calling her back to the reality and breaking the chilly silence as though with a knife.

“Had the neighbour’s dog fallen into the compost pit”? Nancy wondered. The soft, pleading whining continued relentlessly, sometimes strong, at other moments almost inaudible. All Nancy could do, was await the break of day.

At the crack of dawn, she rushed out to look into the compost pit. However, even before she could go that far, she saw a tiny, brown puppy with a white-tipped tail and white-tipped ears! So tiny, yet so cute! And my, wasn’t it shivering! Nancy sighed with relief as she picked up the little cuty, warming her inside her nightgown. “Some warm milk ought to get you started, don’t you think,” she whispered. You should have seen the speed at which the milk went down, while the tail was wagging as though about to break off! Her winter had turned to summer. Yes, Wynter had found a home.

Every season speaks of the mercies and promises of GOD. As green vegetation turns to white, I remember His promise in Isaiah 55:10,11 “As the rain and snow come down from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and flourish, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word that comes forth from my mouth. It shall not return to me empty but shall accomplish that for which I sent purpose and prosper in that for which I sent it.” Little by little, winter gives way to spring and flowers bud and flourish. Emotions which had turned cold and hard, due to life’s hard blows, begin to soften and to become sensitive again. Pessimism gives way to hope as roadside flowers brighten the path and death gives way to life. Ideas blossom, business looks up, families reunite, hope rings the bell on the door of love.seed

Spring warms into summer… the realization of our dreams, the fulfillment of our vision! I knew things would look up! I knew God would answer in His time! I knew I should never have doubted His Word. As Joshua had commanded the sun to stand still until he had won the day, so also summer’s long days and short nights enable battles to be won if we hold on just a little longer and sleep a little less. Those rare moments when victory knocks on your door and every sinew of your being cries out to you to go for it, step out, hold out and hold on till you come out victorious. Summer is the time for teamwork, a time to build relationships and make the most of friendship. Not every day is summer.

But alas! As the saying goes, ‘Good times don’t last always.’ Summer soon gives way to Autumn. Trees lose their garments as leaves and flowers fall. Whatever was not well grounded must, and will give way. That opportune time has been lost, sometimes, never to be revisited. That business deal has fallen through because courage was not ours in the hour of need. That loved one has fallen into the arms of another because we never said what we should, when we should and how we should. Worse still, we never took the step to do what courage demanded. Autumn still holds hope for those who have enough faith to fight a moment longer, those who took advantage of the good times to ground themselves; those who had stored up provision for the season of need.

Whether it be winter, spring, summer or autumn, every season holds life lessons. No season lasts forever. As the wisest of men once said in Ecclesiastes 9:11, “The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise nor riches to the intelligent, nor favour to to men of understanding. But time and chance happen to us all.”

Let every season fulfill its purpose in your life. Have a blessed and prosperous 2014!

Go ahead and achieve your fullest potential because YOU ARE SOMEONE!

Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.
